Browser loading blank page, but site pings?
Posted on 18. Oct, 2009 by John in Technology
I’ve been having this strange issue on my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.6.1) lately where the internet will not load any websites. The browser (Safari, Firefox or Opera) would contact the website (seen by the fact that the site name would show up in the status bar or tab), but then the page would simply show up blank.
If you open Terminal and ping the website (no matter what it is) it will respond as expected.
If you you do a traceroute [url] it will not finish, but rather begin showing three *’s after one of the hops before it finishes hopping. I’m not sure this has anything to do with this problem though.
Solution (for my situation)
I found that Covenant Eyes (an application I use for accountability) needed to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
Possible solution (for your situation)
Covenant Eyes is a great program, but is (at it’s most basic level) a proxy, though it is a lot more complicated than that. So, if you are using a program that is acting as a proxy of sorts you may want to try uninstalling it and see if the issue subsides. Then try reinstalling your program again.
