How fast is "your" computer???

Posted on 02. May, 2009 by John in Technology

Me and my buddy Jordan were curious about how fast different operating systems boot up and shut down and thought it might be interesting to blog about it. Here is what we found.  The seconds for boot up times are from when we hit the power button to when the log in screen appears and the shut down times are from when the shut down command is invoked to when the machine is completely off.

Here is a link to Jordan’s post.

OS X Leopard (10.5.6.)
Macbook Pro
2.16 GHz, 3GB RAM (667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM)

  • UP = 23.1s
  • DOWN = 7.2s
  • DOWN+ (with OS X Mail, iTunes, Firefox and iChat open) = 10.5s

Windows Vista 64bit
Dell Precision M4300

  • UP = 45.2s
  • DOWN = 31.3s

Ubuntu 9.04
Dell Precision M4300

  • UP = 19.1s
  • DOWN = 9.8s

Maybe this will help someone make a better decision when buying a used computer.
